A Boy’s First Knife

Only kind of : ) My son is now 6. He actually got his first knife around 4 and have went through various stages of what he was allowed to do with it. Now, he is pretty good at using one, and actually wear one quite a bit.

He originally stole my Bark River Classic Hunter. Being an appropriate size for him, I didn’t have too many complaints. But, I also wanted more of a “beater” for him, and got a Mora 511. I chose the 511 because of the generous guard and the smaller handle size. Here he is a while ago with his “collection.”

I had the idea a while ago that it would be cool if a company made a knife called “A Boy’s First Knife.” Something that was appropriately sized for younger hands and something that was a bit more “special” to give to your son. Well, now that I make knives, I can do whatever I want, and that is exactly what I did : )

So, I got out all the knives that he currently owns, and a few of mine. We tried to draw out what he wanted. I shaped and made the handle to his own hand size.

Here is our planning session.

When searching for handle materials, he originally wanted “blue.” We went online shopping for handles and when he saw orange and black G10, he thought it was cool because it looked like a tiger. So, that was it, and here is what we came up with.

Here is a picture of the project in-process.

The thing is one mean slicer too. When done with it I made super fine curls out of post it notes, made some mean fuzz sticks, and shave the hair off my arm. Of course the wife says “does he really need a knife that sharp.” And my reply is “absolutely.”

Of course, I can grind this knife scandi as well.
